Blogger Bio Basics: How to Proudly Toot Your Own Horn!

Your Blogger Bio can be the key to unlocking opportunities for you to work with the brands that are on your wish list. How can a brand know if you’re the right fit for a campaign unless they know who you are, what you’re an expert in, what kind of campaigns you’ve done in the past and where you see yourself in the future? Whether you keep your Blogger Bio on your About Page or LinkedIn profile, it needs to be written and updated regularly (at least once a month). Most importantly, don’t be afraid to toot your own horn!

Blogger Bio Basics

Headshot – Get a professional photographer or your blogging buddy to take a clear headshot of you. It should let us see your face, head and shoulders. For fashion bloggers, full-length photos of your outfits are great. For foodies, what do you look like in your kitchen? Parenting bloggers can include a head shot and a family photo.

About Video –  2015 is going to be the year of video. That’s why we encouraged you to Get Over Your Fear of Video Blogging. Create a one to two-minute video telling your audience and brands who you are! Embed your most recent video blog. If you appeared in a video campaign or commercial, even better! Niche Parent Community Manager Joyce Brewer has an about video on her YouTube channel and About Page:

Ambassadorships – Create a brief list of who you’ve represented in the past as an ambassador.

Popular Posts – What posts have your audience loved and shared? This is also an indication of what you’re an expert in!

Stats – Traffic and social media numbers belong in your blogger bio because they show your influence. If you think your numbers are “too low,” you can also highlight your growth or recent increase in followers. For instance, “I tripled my Twitter following in one month!”

Media Appearances & Speaking – Did you present at Niche Parent or another conference? Include the topic and additional information in your bio. Have you been featured in magazine, newspaper or TV news story? Include those clips and mentions. Your blogger bio can also help you land more media appearances. Quick tip: Add a link (on your blog, Google Drive or Dropbox)  where journalists can download your bio and headshot.

Family – For parenting bloggers, use your blogger bio to tell us about your family. What languages are spoken at home? What sports and activities do your children enjoy?  Are you a home schooling parent? Are you active in the PTA? This is also an ideal opportunity to include a family photo.

Look Ahead –  What’s coming up in the next few months? Are you traveling or speaking at a conference? Is your family taking an international trip? Include your upcoming projects in your bio. Encourage your audience to follow your journey and include relevant hashtags!

Comment below: How often do you update your bio? If you’re afraid to sound like you’re bragging in your bio, ask a friend or contributor to write it for you!
