Five Tips To Getting Sponsored to Attend A Blogging Conference

If you would like to attend a social media conference, February/March (or even earlier) is the time to start reaching out to potential sponsors. Most conferences have already announced their dates and locations; now you have to do your homework to determine which conference you will attend.

In planning The Niche Parent Conference and Blogalicious Weekend, I worked with GM/ChevyMcDonald’sHuggies LatinoBritax, and more. As a blogger, I also had the experience of being sponsored by a brand to attend a conference. Now that I work at an ad agency, I’m seeing the full picture. Its given me great perspective on pitching and getting pitched.

Social Media Influence

Most seasoned bloggers attend three or more conferences a year. Since each conference is an investment of about  $800-$1,000+, that’s a hefty dent into any family budget.Enter, blog conference sponsorships. Many bloggers have attended conferences with the help of a brand. Flight, conference pass, and hotel costs may have been supplemented or totally paid for.  Such brands realize that sending a blogger to serve as a brand advocate to expose the brand to hundreds of other bloggers makes total sense from an advertising perspective. And it does.

Your pitch should explain this.  During this time of year, not only are bloggers defining budgets but so are brands. Or more importantly, the agencies tasked with helping brands define how and where those marketing dollars will be spent.  By now, marketing budgets have already been approved, now its time to define where and how those marketing dollars will be spent.

As a blogger, you have the power to make the lives of PR and marketing professionals easier by helping them identify creative ways to spend some of those dollars. At my ad agency, I work with a team trying to come up with the best way to do a lot of things, spending dollars is one of those tasks. By pitching a brand right, you help make someone’s job easier. Below I share some tips.

Five Tips to Pitching A Brand To Sponsor a Blogging Conference:

  1. Find a conference whose attendee or blog audience fits the target consumer of the brand you want to pitch. If you are attending a conference for mom bloggers, pitch a brand that sells to moms and make the connection in your pitch.  Don’t assume the rep knows who will be in attendance at the conference or who their blog audiences are.
  2. Pitch the right person and do so in the right way. A tweet to your potential brand is usually not well received. Also, you’re not reaching the right person. Usually a community manager is behind the tweet. You really want the account executive or supervisor, the person in an agency that knows the ins and outs of the brand .
  3. Send a professionally designed media kit. In two-three pages, identify all the important info in bullet format. Include your most recent blog stats (monthly pageviews/unique visitors, Klout score, Twitter followers, Fans on Facebook, etc.). Highlight some other brands  you have worked for and include links to sponsored posts. Make sure those posts have comments.  Avoid posts about a competitor brand.  If you’ve never worked for a brand, write a post about a brand/product you love and get comments on it.
  4. Include examples of what sort of exposure you’ll accomplish for the brand. How will you get eyeballs (impressions) for the brand? Usually writing a pre and post conference post is standard. Tweet using the brand’s hashtag during the conference.
  5. Name your price clearly.  Some bloggers offer tiers in their sponsorship kit. I don’t recommend this option for bigger brands.  The idea of sharing your exposure with a competitor is not attractive.  With that said, pitch your sponsorship as being an exclusive opportunity to that brand.
