Member Spotlight is on Maria Wen Adcock

Maria Wen Adcock (Bicultural Mama) is a first generation Chinese-American married to an All-American man from Long Island. Prior to her writing career, Maria acquired her MBA and worked in marketing for over 15 years for top consumer products and magazine publishing companies in the Midwest and New York. Maria launched Bicultural Mama to provide a bicultural perspective on all things related to parenting, culture, and society. She is also Editor of the parenting resource site Long Island Mamas Network and is a freelance writer for several regional and national online and print publications.

Niche Mommy (NM): What influenced you to start blogging and why?
Maria Adcock (MA): Although I worked in business for most of my career, I had always wanted to write, but just didn’t know how to make a career of it. I started blogging after I decided to make a life and career change after my daughter was born. I wanted to spend more time with her and pursue writing so blogging gave me a way to combine my love of both family and writing.

NM: If you could have any job in the world, what would it be and why?
MA: It may sound like a cliché, but being a mom is a job and it’s been the most fulfilling one I’ve had in my career. Sure, it doesn’t pay, but that’s why I freelance write on the side. When I look back on my life one day, I won’t have regrets that I didn’t spend enough time raising my child.

NM: Name someone who has had an impact on your life and how?
MA: My husband, Matthew, has had a big impact on my life. He’s changed it for the better and is supportive of my writing endeavors. He’s also a great husband and an involved father so I’m very lucky to have met him!

NM: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
MA: I see myself more established in my writing career and hopefully will have a book published, too. Also hope to have a bigger family!

NM: What on your resume are you most proud of?
MA: I’m most proud of launching Bicultural Mama which is my “baby” besides my actual baby. It’s very fulfilling to create and grow it both personally and professionally. I’ve also met a lot of great Bloggers and writers through it.

NM: Do you have any hidden talents?
MA: I took classical piano lessons for 12 years as a child so I can sight read pretty much anything!

NM: Why did you join The Niche Mommy Network?
MA: There are so many parenting blogs out there, but we’re not all the same. The Niche Mommy Network recognizes this and focuses on diverse, high quality parenting blogs so readers know when they read a blog in this network that they’ll know what to expect.

NM: What’s on your bucket list?
MA: I would love to swim with dolphins. I hear it’s a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. I know there are many places to do this type of activity; it’s just a matter of finding the time and resources to travel to one of these places.

NM: What is your favorite restaurant and what do you get?
MA: One of my favorite restaurants is Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I know when I go there that any item I order will be superb in terms of taste, quality and creativeness. It’s a local deli that is nationally recognized for its food.

NM: What is your greatest fear?
MA: One of my greatest fears is that I may not be doing enough to pass down my Chinese culture to my bicultural child and that my heritage may end with me. We can trace back my family a couple thousand of years in China so it’s important to keep our heritage alive.

NM: Money is not a problem for you, where would you visit and why?
MA: I would like to go on one of those around the world trips and visit every continent. I love learning about new place and immersing myself into local cultures.

NM: Which came first: the chicken or the egg?
MA: Chicken – I’m just guessing there had to be a chicken to lay the egg?

NM: If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be?
MA: I love Oprah and she’s so interesting so would definitely want to have dinner with her. Prince William would be cool as I’ve never met a real prince and he seems like a nice guy. Lastly, Michelle Obama – politics aside, she is a diverse modern woman who’s raising a family and had a career so she’s relatable.

NM: Coke or Pepsi?
MA: Coke – I grew up with it more than with Pepsi.
