4 Reasons Why You May Not Be Getting Paid to Blog

I often get asked how bloggers can get paid or sponsored blog post opportunities. Influencers can be paid anywhere from a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars per article. There are multiple ways in which bloggers can earn income through blogging. One of the most common ways is by working through a blogging network like The Network Niche.

For sponsored blog post campaigns, I often am asked why an influencer was not selected to work on a paid campaign.

As a network of bloggers that offers paid blogging and social media campaigns, we work closely with our clients to identify bloggers and influencers that are a good fit for the blogger outreach campaigns we’re working on. With most of our campaigns, we’ll get over 300 influencers to apply. How can you make sure your blog is selected for the campaign? There are a number of things to consider.

4 Reasons Why You May Not Be Getting Paid to BlogFirst, before each blogging campaign is launched, the account executive we’re working with has already identified to us their target audience or blogger. Finding the right bloggers to work on the campaign is important to ensure the campaign’s success. Below are some examples of target audiences and bloggers we have been asked to identify in past campaigns:

  • Foodies and recipe creators whose audience includes mostly women between the ages of 30 to 45.
  • Millennial or GenX parents who share healthy living tips with their readers
  • Home improvement, DIY, crafters, or design influencers whose audience are homeowners, new homeowners, young couples, or young families.

Second, when it’s time to select bloggers that fit the right criteria, we’re considering a number of factors to see which bloggers are a good fit. Once the list has been vetted, we’ll send over a list of candidates for brand and client approval.

Below are the top four factors that may impact whether you’re the right candidate for a paid blogging opportunity.

Four Reasons You May Not Be Getting Sponsored Blog Campaigns

  1. Content or niche not a good fit for the campaign. I usually outline the type of niche the client is focusing on for a campaign and will request sample articles or columns in the application form. Include your best post on the subject or a link to the category or tab to all content containing relevant articles. (For example, all articles tagged or under the “Healthy Recipes” category on your blog.) This helps greatly in the selection process and your samples are sent to the client for review.
  2. Competitor content is current or visible on the homepage or in recent articles. If we’re selecting bloggers for a home improvement client, it’s best not to have ads or content for a competitor front and center on your blog. This doesn’t mean that if you worked with one brand in the past, your excluded from ever working with another brand. Instead, consider temporarily unpublishing the competitor post or removing the competitor ads.
  3. Blog design or template is outdated. More and more, I’m hearing from clients how much blog design matters when selecting bloggers for a campaign. The feedback agencies and brands are providing could include a blog is outdated, is not responsive for mobile, or is poorly designed. If your blog template is more than three years old, you may be due for an update. A redesign is an important and valuable investment in your growth as an influencer. 4. Followers/Reach too low. Follower size does matter, but not always. While we usually focus on well-written content and design first, we often asked to also consider an influencers total reach or audience size. When it comes to social, Twitter and Instagram are usually the most important social channels considered by a client. We report those numbers along with total page views or visitors to your blog.
