How to Practice Social Media Sensitivity During a Natural Disaster

Wildfires out west, tornadoes in the midwest and hurricanes on the East Coast are just a few of the natural disasters that trend on social media. As an influencer, it’s important to make sure your online presence doesn’t appear insensitive during a national tragedy. Below you’ll find some guidelines to practice social media sensitivity, while providing vital information to your audience.

Social Media Sensitivity Guidelines

Announce your social media plan is during the natural disaster. For example, tell your Facebook audience that for several hours, a day or more that you’re planning to provide helpful information for victims.  If you promise to tweet emergency information while a storm makes landfall, announce your plan on Twitter.

Limit your sponsored content. Do you want to post a funny opinion piece on your blog the same day a category five storm is hits South Carolina? Is the sponsored craft post requiring a glue gun the best thing to share when people are losing powers? Ask a brand or PR rep if you can post on an alternate date during a national disaster.

Share lessons learned from your disaster experience. If you’ve experienced an emergency, share your takeaways and memories with your audience.

Become a resource during a natural disasterAmplify official safety information about storms and emergencies. Share the most up-to-date information from official social media channels. Make sure you’re following profiles for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), State Emergency Management Agency, The Weather Channel,  National Weather Service (NWS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, State/Regional Food Banks, and State/Regional Diaper Banks.

Turn to microblogging. If your audience is in the path of a storm or emergency, there time online is limited.  Although you can pack in a lot of information in a blog post, remember to use microblogging platforms like Instagram and Twitter to share helpful information.

Make a donation to disaster relief. Donate your personal funds or contribute your product sales for a portion of time to a relief effort your trust.

“Walk the walk” by volunteering. Before or after a natural disaster donate your time to a local relief effort, then share your experience with readers. Consider opportunities to give your time in disadvantaged and third world countries, as well.
