2020 Pinterest Updates You Need to Know About

Pinterest launched in 2010. Fast forward 10 years and the Pinterest platform known for its storyboard features has more than 300 million active monthly users.  The company revealed more than half of those users live outside the U.S. Like all social media platforms, Pinterest is constantly changing what appears in its feed to provide a more enjoyable experience for users. It should be no surprise that Pinterest wants to prioritize fresh new content vs. older popular content.

As a content creator, Pinterest is your go-to place to add engaging imagery designed to provide traffic to your blog.  If you answer these key questions for users on Pinterest, you’ll see an increase in views, clicks, and sales:

  1. What should I wear?
  2. What should I cook?
  3. What should I make/create?

Fresh Images for Pins

Pinterest would like to see new, fresh images. Older popular pins will see lower engagement on Pinterest.

You’re encouraged to create fresh pins, layouts and photos. Rely on design tools like Canva, PicMonkey, or Adobe Illustrator.

Story Pins

Instagram stories aren’t the only popular way to share stories. They’re images with text you can swipe to continue watching.

Pinterest stories will appear in your home feed on Pinterest: “A Story Pin gives you all the information you need to make a recipe or craft, so you can tap into it from the home feed to swipe through to get creative.”

Story pins aren’t available to all Pinterest users – yet. As of May 2020, story pins are available on IOS for Android users.

Pinterest Hashtags

While you may be more familiar with hashtags on Twitter and Instagram, Pinterest recommends that you use hashtags too.

“Use words or phrases that describe the content in the Pin – we recommend you add no more than 20 hashtags per Pin. It’s best to be objective and use hashtags that make sense and are relevant to the Pin.”
