Does Your Blog Need a Podcast Too?

Does Your Blog Need a Podcast Too? Aside from blogging and promoting your content on social channels, podcasts are becoming an ever-popular outlet for bloggers. For background, a podcast is an audio show that listeners can download at their leisure. You may recall before our 2014 conference, we hosted a Twitter chat about podcasting and we hosted a panel discussion on the topic. Since then, podcasting has grown exponentially Our CEO Nadia Jones even shared 7 Reasons Why Bloggers Should Start a Podcast. We’ll break down some of the steps you can take to launch a podcast, while also pointing out that there’s plenty of freedom in realizing that podcasting is NOT for everyone.

Producing a Podcast

Unlike a radio show, you can produce a podcast with a small investment like a microphone and a dedicated quiet place to record.

There are several ways to also produce your podcast on-the-go if you travel a lot or work remotely. Here are several mobile podcasting apps for iPad and iPhone.

Creating Podcast Content

Content ideas for podcasts can come from a variety of places like trending topics, old blog posts, interviews or Q&A’s with experts. Many bloggers use a podcast to promote their free downloads or professional services.

Your podcast content can be related to your blog, but it can also be on any topic you desire.

For example, Rene Syler of GoodEnoughMother.com launched a brief podcast series when she was going through a personal struggle. She reminds any blogger considering launching a podcast to consider whether their motivation is from others or from within.

“For me, because I am a creative, it is just another outlet and one that can spur creativity in other areas. You see, creativity is not linear; I think moving and growing comes from doing things that are not necessarily in your wheelhouse. So to those who might be feeling pressure to start a podcast, make sure they are doing it for the right reasons (to spur, tweak creativity) and go easy on themselves.”

Think of a podcast as an off-camera video or an extension of your blog’s persona on Instastories.

Promoting a Podcast

Just like blog content, podcasts need promotion to reach more listeners. Leave links to your podcast on your blog and pin it to your social channels. Remind listeners to subscribe to your podcast so they’ll get alerts and reminders about your new content.

Comment below: Is there a social media channel where you don’t have a presence to promote your blog? How do you feel this affects opportunities to have a broader reach or work with brands?

If the idea of starting your own podcast seems overwhelming, don’t feel pressured to do it. Seek out podcasts to support and offer your expertise for an interview on another creator’s podcast.
