We are so excited about the city of New Orleans hosting us for the first Niche Mommy Conference. New Orleans offers the perfect backdrop to celebrate each other and the diverse backgrounds and voices of our attendees. With so much culture and diversity, New Orleans is certainly a place to be inspired. We know that some of you are bringing your plus one or your families to the conference. In fact, I know two attendees that will be celebrating their wedding anniversaries while at the conference. Whether you are going alone or bringing your families, we wanted to give you a little taste of what you can expect while in New Orleans. Our agenda includes some down time to give you an opportunity to explore New Orleans. With that said, we will be doing a series featuring useful information for you to enjoy the full experience while you are there.
Multicultural Facts About New Orleans
- Many of New Orleans’ beloved Mardi Gras traditions are African-American, most prominently the Mardi Gras Indians and the Zulu parade that rolls behind Rex on Mardi Gras Day. You can see a lot of this influence in the iron work that is prominent on many of the buildings.
- Although the French Quarter’s early residents were French, the architecture of the French Quarter is actually Spanish. To pay a war debt, France gave up control of Louisiana to Spain, who controlled the colony from 1763 until 1803.
- New Orleans is home to two historically black colleges, Dillard University and Xavier University which is the only African-American Catholic university in the country.
- Many of the multicultural festivals and traditions that can be seen almost all year long include jazz funerals, second lines dances, Mardi Gras Indians, Voodoo ceremonies, gospel brunches, St. Joseph Day Alters and more. Find out more about these multicultural traditions here.
- NOLA is home to the first free black neighborhood in the United States, Faubourg Tremé (faubourg is French for “suburb”). Tremé was incorporated in 1812 and was also the neighborhood that gave rise to jazz, brass bands, incredible architecture, Mardi Gras Indians, and several pioneers of the civil rights movement.
